Dirac operators in non-trivial topology backgrounds in a finite box are reviewed. We analyze how the formalism translates to the lattice, with special emphasis on uniform field backgrounds.

Comparing lattice Dirac operators in smooth instanton backgrounds
We compare the behavior of different lattice Dirac operators in gauge backgrounds which are lattice discretizations of a classical instanton. In particular we analyze the overlap Dirac operator, a chirally improved Dirac operator and the standard Wilson operator. We discuss the flow of real eigenvalues as a function of the instanton size. An analysis of the eigenvectors shows that, due to their...
متن کاملThe Index of a Ginsparg-Wilson Dirac Operator
A novel feature of a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operator is discussed. Unlike the Dirac operator for massless fermions in the continuum, this lattice Dirac operator does not possess topological zero modes for any topologically-nontrivial background gauge fields, even though it is exponentially-local, doublers-free, and reproduces correct axial anomaly for topologically-trivial gauge configur...
متن کاملA perturbative calculation of the axial anomaly of a Ginsparg-Wilson Dirac operator
A recent proposal suggests that even if a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operator does not possess topological zero modes in any topologicallynontrivial gauge backgrounds, it can reproduce correct axial anomaly for topologically-trivial gauge configurations, provided that it is exponentiallylocal, doublers-free, and has correct continuum behavior. In this paper, we calculate the axial anomaly of...
متن کاملImproving the Dirac Operator in Lattice QCD
Recently various new concepts for the construction of Dirac operators in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) have been introduced. These operators satisfy the so-called Ginsparg-Wilson condition (GWC), thus obeying the Atiyah-Singer index theorem and violating chiral symmetry only in a modest and local form. Here we present studies in 4-d for SU(3) gauge configurations with non-trivial topolog...
متن کاملTopological characteristics of lattice Dirac operators
We show that even if a lattice Dirac operator satisfies the conditions consisting of locality, free of species doublings, correct continuum behavior, γ5-hermiticity and the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, it does not necessarily have exact zero modes in nontrivial gauge backgrounds. This implies that each lattice Dirac operator has its own topological characteristics which cannot be fixed by these co...
